The

Brief

Everyone counted them out. The film starts there.

Built for the College Football Playoff opener, this film encapsulates Notre Dame’s 2024 season as a story rather than a highlight reel. It opens on the loss to NIU and a season that looked over, then follows the run that followed — everyone counting the Irish out, every game won after. Cut entirely from season footage with VFX animation placed at the turns, it was posted during the playoff run to ride a moment millions were already watching.

How it Ran

How it Ran

01

Concept

Notre Dame’s 2024 season was a story before it was a highlight reel. It opened with a home loss to Northern Illinois that had everyone — fans, media, the team’s own supporters — writing the year off. Then the Irish won every game after it, closed the regular season at USC on two fourth-quarter pick-sixes, and finished 11–1 with a College Football Playoff first-round game against Indiana at home. The assignment for Notre Dame Barstool was to encapsulate the whole arc in one film and land it the moment the playoff run began. The creative idea was the structure itself: open on the loss, not the wins. Doubt to vindication, delivered when the audience most wanted to feel it.

02

Capture

Cut entirely from season footage with no original shoot — broadcast, program, and social sources assembled into one timeline. The structure follows a hero’s return: the preseason hype, the crash, the comeback. The first decision was to tell it in that order and let the NIU loss sit as the low point rather than skipping past it, because the recognizable shape of the story is what makes it land. The second was where the VFX animation goes. The social-post beats — the tweets and headlines counting the team out — are animated to pull attention right after the low, and the animation is placed at those turns rather than spread across the film. Overdone, VFX looks cheap; placed intentionally, it holds the piece together. The third decision was timing: build the whole edit around a moment millions were already watching, so the film rode the CFP’s attention instead of competing with it.

Campaign

Posted to Instagram during the playoff run, in the window between the regular season ending and the first-round game against Indiana — when every Notre Dame fan was already online and already emotional about the season. It ran as a collaboration post, which put it in front of both the Barstool audience and Harry’s own, and it became the top-performing Notre Dame piece on his account. The timing did the distribution: a season film released at the one moment the season was the only thing anyone wanted to talk about.
